The General Amnesty Law in Iraq

On Thursday, the Chief Justice issued directives to implement the General Amnesty Law No. 27 of 2016.

This decision came after the Iraqi Presidency approved the opening of discussions concerning the General Amnesty Law, based on the success of the first clause of Article 61, second paragraph of Article 73 of the same law.

The Iraqi Council of Representatives approved the second amendment to the General Amnesty Law No. (27), which includes provisions that could, according to critical viewpoints, allow perpetrators of crimes associated with the "ISIS" organization to escape punishment. This move has faced notable criticism from the Ibrahimic communities in particular.

There are also new political costs aimed at reviving the General Amnesty Law in Iraq, posing legal challenges related to monitoring its implementation and assisting its beneficiaries.

Based on what has been revealed, a team of lawyers will receive application forms from those wishing to benefit from the amnesty, which will be formally submitted to the relevant authorities.

In a related context, political forces denied this proposal according to press reports, pointing out that the general amnesty could enhance injustice, as some parties work to provide their services under the framework of confessions obtained under duress.

Although this law has become effective in the country, the conflict and disparities among political factions continue.
